Post Partum Doula Services

What is a Postpartum Doula?

Postpartum doulas have the special role of mothering the new mother after the birth of her baby.

Since the beginning of time women have been caring for one another, especially after the birth of a baby. Grandmothers, mothers, mother in- laws, sisters, aunts, cousins, and friends all are known to lend critical support at this time in a new mother’s life. In a perfect world a new mother would have their own mother or another family member to step in with an extra set of hands, wisdom and a rested mind. Unfortunately, our society has changed in that these ties are not always there; family members may lead busier lives, work full time jobs, or may not live in the same place.

The trained postpartum doula can bridge the gap and step in to offer the much needed support a new mother needs. The emotions of birth and the adjustment to being a new mother can be very overwhelming. The postpartum doula can help mothers start off on the right foot, encouraging her innate ability to care for her own baby, and increasing her confidence in doing so.

She is skilled and knowledgeable about the care and development of infants as well as maternal recovery and adjustment. She provides non judgmental guidance and expertise on postpartum comfort measures, on newborn care and feeding, breastfeeding support. She assists the mother with physical and emotional recovery, cares for baby so the mother can care for herself, assists in sibling care, and provides practical household assistance through this major transition.

The postpartum doula will have a thorough understanding of the typical postpartum mother and infant and will not hesitate to advise the mother to contact her caregiver if there are any symptoms outside the “normal” guidelines. She is trained to know when things are not progressing normally and how to utilize and share available resources and referrals when necessary. The postpartum doula does NOT provide medical care or medical advice for the mother or the baby.

Our Postpartum Doulas are well connected in the birthing community and well and acquainted with the professional resources in the area, such as physicians and midwives, lactation consultants and educators, counselors and support groups.
